SD man sentenced to 20 years for raping two 15-year-old girls
PIERRE, S.D. -- Colby Joe Carroll was released on a no-bail bond last fall less than two months after being arrested and charged with raping a 15-year-old girl in Pierre. Less than a month later, he raped another 15-year-old girl, he admitted earlier this year.
On Tuesday, May 22, in state court in Pierre, Carroll was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the two crimes. But he could be released in about 11 years. Carroll turned 21 in jail in January.
According to court documents, Carroll was charged in August, by a grand jury’s indictment, with the fourth-degree rape of a 15-year-old girl on Aug. 21.
The charge is a Class 3 felony with a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison; he also was charged with a lesser felony count of soliciting the girl, a minor, for sex.
Because he already had been charged with the previous alleged rape, the second rape charge was “enhanced,” to a Class 2 felony, which carried a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.
Barnett ordered Carroll to obtain sex offender treatment “to the maximum degree possible” while in prison and perhaps more during his years of supervised probation after he’s released from prison.
